Adopting an animal from Minneapolis Animal Care and Control reflects both a personal commitment and a broader contribution to the local community. As the city’s primary municipal shelter, it serves animals that are often lost, surrendered, or in need of urgent placement, making each adoption especially meaningful. Local shelters like Minneapolis Animal Care and Control operate with limited resources while managing high intake volumes. Adoption directly alleviates overcrowding, allowing staff and volunteers to redirect time and care toward other vulnerable animals.
You can apply to adopt a pet from MACC if you:
Are at least 18-years-old
Can show a valid government-issued ID with your current address
Have knowledge and consent of all adults living in your household
Have your landlord’s consent to bring an animal onto the property
Understand that all other pets in your house must be up to date on their rabies vaccine
Understand that we have the right to refuse the adoption of any animal
Have no unpaid fines or citations from Animal Care & Control
All dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped prior to adoption.
Dogs receive DA2PP (canine distemper combination), Bordatella (kennel cough combination), and Rabies vaccines (if age appropriate).
Cats receive PRC (feline distemper) and Rabies vaccines (if age appropriate).
To adopt a pet:
MACC does not require an appointment to adopt an animal. However, if the animal's listing says that it is currently in a foster home, please call 612-673-6222 to make an appointment to meet the animal at MACC. Please note this phone number is to local dispatch, and they are not shelter staff.
View available pets online, then visit us at the shelter during the hours listed at the top of the page. Complete an application when you come to the shelter. The kennel areas are currently not open to the public.
If there's an adoptable animal who is a good fit for you, you can apply and take it home with you on the same day.
If an animal is listed as pre-adoptable:
To pre-adopt, you must visit the shelter in person to meet the animal.
If the animal’s owner does not reclaim them during the stray hold, your pre-adoption moves forward.
Once the pet is spayed or neutered, MACC will contact you to schedule an adoption appointment for the day after their surgery.
It’s a great way to get a head start on welcoming your new best friend home.
